I Write the Songs - Barry Manilow (1976)

"I Write the Songs" es una canción popular escrita por Bruce Johnston en 1975. La versión de Barry Manilow alcanzó el número uno en la lista Billboard Hot 100 en enero de 1976 después de pasar dos semanas en la cima de la lista Billboard para adultos contemporáneos en diciembre de 1975. Se ganó un premio Grammy por la canción del año y fue nominada a grabación del Año en 1977. Billboard la clasificó como la canción número 13 de 1976.

Johnston ha declarado que, para él, el "yo" de la canción es Dios, y que las canciones provienen del espíritu de creatividad de todos. Ha dicho que la canción no trata sobre su compañero de banda de los Beach Boys, Brian Wilson. 

Al principio, Manilow se mostró reacio a grabar la canción, afirmando en su autobiografía Sweet Life: "El problema con la canción era que si no escuchabas con atención la letra, pensarías que el cantante estaba cantando sobre sí mismo. Podría malinterpretarse. como un monumental viaje del ego". Después de la persuasión de Clive Davis, el entonces presidente de Arista Records, Manilow grabó la canción, y su versión de "I Write the Songs" fue el primer sencillo extraído del álbum Tryin 'to Get the Feeling. Primero se trazó en el Billboard Hot 100 el 15 de noviembre de 1975, alcanzando la cima de la lista nueve semanas después, el 17 de enero de 1976.

Después de que su versión alcanzó el número uno, el propio Manilow compuso una canción novedosa basada en esta canción que grabó bajo el título "Realmente escribo las canciones" en la que canta sobre cómo compone cada parte de una canción y la línea "a veces realmente escribo las canciones" al final de cada verso. En el final canta, "a veces ... ah, qué diablos ... yo escribo las canciones". Inédito en ese momento, se incluyó como una pista extra en la reedición de su álbum This One's for You en 2006.

La versión original fue grabada por Captain & Tennille, quienes trabajaron con Johnston a principios de la década de 1970 con los Beach Boys. Aparece en su álbum de 1975 Love Will Keep Us Together. 

El primer lanzamiento de "I Write the Songs" como sencillo fue del ídolo adolescente David Cassidy en su álbum en solitario de 1975 The Higher They Climb, que también fue producido por Johnston. La versión de Cassidy alcanzó el número 11 en la lista de singles del Reino Unido en agosto de ese año.
